THE 2010
SCIENCE TEACHING AWARD

The SCIENCE TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION OF MANITOBA annually awards one or more Science Teaching Awards in the field of K-12 science education. Each Manitoba teacher is invited to share in the selection process by sending nominations to STAM for review by the Awards and Recognition Committee. The awards are designed to recognize Manitoba teachers currently teaching at the early, middle, or senior years levels, who are making exemplary contributions to the field of science teaching.

Deadline for nominations is Friday, May 14, 2010.

SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The SCIENCE TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION OF MANITOBA annually awards one or more Science Achievement Awards in the field of K-12 science education. Manitoba teachers, current students, and/or former students are invited to share in the selection process by sending nominations to STAM for review by the Awards and Recognition Committee. The STAM Science Achievement Award is designed to recognize teachers, individuals, or organizations having made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the field of science teaching and/or the promotion of science education in Manitoba.

         Professional Development Grants for Science
                                     Teachers

          STAM would like to recognize the importance of professional
          development to the teaching of Kindergarten through Grade 12 
          Sciences and to encourage Manitoba teachers to attend
          conferences, workshops, and courses that will enrich, perfect, and
          inform their practice. Development Grants and selection criteria

        2009-2010 Innovator Grants

The STAM community is rich with creativity and exemplary teaching practice. Many of our science teachers will see these new curricula as an opportunity to draw on their personal experience and professional expertise to develop exciting new ways of teaching science. The STAM Innovator Grants Program is designed to support these innovative members, and to share the results of their labour with the STAM membership.  The STAM Innovator Grants are designed to support teaching members of STAM in the development of classroom materials that are beneficial to the science teaching community at large.

Rationale

Manitoba's science curricula have and continue to undergo significant changes in content and process skills.  This is both an exciting and challenging time for science education.

The STAM community is rich with creativity and exemplary teaching practice. Many of our science teachers will see these new curricula as an opportunity to draw on their personal experience and professional expertise to develop exciting new ways of teaching science. The STAM Innovator Grants Program is designed to support these innovative members, and to share the results of their labour with the STAM membership. 

All teachers are strongly encouraged to apply! 

Program Details

Applicants must be members of STAM 
All projects must result in some teaching support material which would be considered useful to a practicing K-12 classroom teacher. 
If selected, projects will be awarded grants to a maximum of $1000 each. 
Recipients of STAM Innovator Grants will be expected to submit a written report by June 25, 2010 for publication in the STAM journal and on the STAM website. 
Recipients of STAM Innovator Grants will be asked to present their work at the STAM SAG Conference and/or Annual Membership Meeting. 

Selection Criteria

The STAM Innovator Grants are designed to support teaching members of STAM in the development of classroom materials that are beneficial to the science teaching community at large. Project applications will be weighed according to the following criteria:

Links to Manitoba's science curricula 
Benefit to fellow science teachers 
Benefits to students 
Evidence of innovation and creativity 
Strategies for sharing results of project with colleagues 
Feasibility of systematic implementation of project results 

Applicants should describe their project with reference to these criteria (2 page maximum), include a proposed budget, and submit their application to STAM.

Deadline for Innovator Grant Application is March 26, 2010.
